HIS MAJESTY LAUNCHES QUEEN'S BATON

His Majesty King Letsie III has on Friday early in the morning officially launched the Queen's Baton Relay (QBR) by walking down towards the T- Junction where he passed the baton over to Prime Minister Dr Pakalitha Mosisili.

His Majesty and the Prime Minister were both accompanied by her Majesty Queen 'Masenate Mohato Seeiso, First Lady, Mrs. 'Mathato Mosisili and some of the Cabinet Ministers.

President of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Mrs. Louse Martin as head of the team accompanying the QBR, explained that the baton comes from Birmingham Palace and carries the message from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England to all the Commonwealth member countries.

She said the message is all about the past, the present and the future in which peace, unity should prevail amongst all the member nations.

Mrs. Martin said Africa has a special place in the Queen's heard, adding that she urged all the athletes to get ready for the forth coming Commonwealth Games to be hosted in Gold Coast next year. 

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Joshua Setipa on behalf of the Minister of Gender and Youth, Sport and Recreation, passed the baton to the Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) representative Mr. Ts'epo Ntaopane who also handed it over the Lesotho Commonwealth Games medalist to run down the Kingsway.

The medalist joined Mpilo Road towards Lesotho National Tennis Courts, Special Olympics and Paralympics also had an opportunity to exchange it amongst themselves.''

The athletes with disability walked with it to join Kingsway where they gave it to sponsors to run until opposite Queen Elizabeth II Hospital before handing the baton back to the CGA.

The sport veterans also had a chance to run with the baton to the main traffic circle where active marathon athletes took it and run with it up to Masianokeng High School where the baton got into the vehicle to start a journey of 82 kilometres to Matelile in the Mafeteng district.

The QBR arrived in the country on Thursday last week (11 May 2017) from Swaziland and Lesotho is the 17th country to host it since it first came to Sierra Leone and it will leave on Monday to South Africa.
