LRA LAUNCHES VOLUNTARY DISCLOSURE PROGRAMME

The Minister of Finance, Dr Moeketsi Majoro says the newly launched Voluntary Disclosure Programme by Lesotho Revenue Authority (LRA) is the reflection and introspection on what the Authority does to restore its integrity and good relations with tax payers.

Dr Majoro was speaking during the official launch of Voluntary Disclosure Programme (VDO) at the event held in Maseru on Tuesday evening. The programme objective is to promote voluntary compliance and expand the tax return among others.

He said alll revenue should be collected from the government and tax payers professionally and with care to promote compliance.

He stressed that tax payers should not pay it because of fear of jail or loss of property, saying there should be mutual trust between LRA and tax payers.

He therefore urged tax payers to get their tax affairs in order and take advantage of this new programme so to go forward.

Speaking at the same event, LRA Commissioner General, Mr. Thabo Khasipe disclosed that Lesotho's business community collects 15 percent while personal income tax of employees contributes 35 percent.

He said LRA introduced the new programme with the aim to address some of the challenges encountered during the tax collection process.

He added that through the programme, tax payers will be forgiven if they come voluntarily to report themselves, as its principles is to among others facilitate voluntary compliance.

Meanwhile, Mr. Khasipe announced that the newly launched programme will be effective from Monday next week (12 February), noting that offices will be opened at Maseru mall and other districts and that once the application is approved, payments will be made at local banks and through other payment methods like ecocash and mpesa.

The Lesotho Revenue Authority was established by Act of Parliament in 2001 and became operational in 2003. It is principally responsible for the assessment, collection and remittance to the government of public revenues in Lesotho.
