Chieftainess ‘Makhethisa Khethisa of Mahobong says education on protection of human rights for mentally disabled persons must be a continuous process to enhance awareness among the community. Speaking with LENA, she commended the effort taken by parents of mentally disabled children, who are members of the Lesotho Society for Mentally handicapped Persons for creating awareness on the plight of such children in schools. She said those parents have changed people’s attitudes towards children with disability as they are now mixing with normal children without fear of being laughed at. She promised that as a Chief of the area, she is prepared to support the association to grow and develop, through further sensititisation of the community and awareness creation to show that caring, loving and protecting the rights of people with disability is a social responsibility. Meanwhile, one of the parents, Mrs ‘Mamot’selisi Motabola, said their association is growing, as there were 15 members when the branch opened at Mahobong in 1997 but they are now over 100. She said one of their achievements was the acceptance of their children in schools with teachers willing to work jointly with the association regarding the training offered by LSMP. She however, noted that the outstanding need now is the establishment of the rehabilitation centre for disabled children, not only for Mahobong disabled children, but for the district as well as neighbouring ones.
