COMPANIES AMENDMENT BILL THUMBS UP |
Senators have
successfully passed the Companies Amendment Bill 2008 tabled
before the house without amendments on Wednesday.
Moving the Bill, the Minister of Trade and Industry,
Cooperatives and Marketing, Mr. Popane Lebesa said the bill
provides for the removal of provisions, which discriminated
against women.
He said it allows women including those who married in
community of property and otherwise to set up companies and
become directors of companies without a requirement to
obtain consent from their husbands.
"The bills strengthens and guarantees gender equality in
business establishment, management and operations in
Lesotho,” he said, noting that this is a clear indication
that Government of Lesotho is committed to eliminate all
forms of discrimination against women.
In support of the Bill, Member of Senate, Mrs. 'Mampho
Motoboli said the bill is an important document as it
empowers women whom she said are effectively involved in the
business sector.
Mrs. Motoboli expressed hope that more women will take the
opportunity and open more companies and thus contribute
towards developing the economy and create more jobs in the
country.
On the other hand, the Principal Chief of Tajane, Chief
Tlali Mohale said although the bill gives women an
opportunity to act as incorporators of a company without the
spouse's consent, he advises families to engage in effective
communication as well as planning together.
