SABOTEURS
CAUGHT OFF-SIDE |
The government
of Lesotho has uncovered a plot to assassinate some cabinet
ministers and plunge the country into anarchy, planned for
later this month.
This was announced on Thursday by Communications Minister Mr. Mothetjoa Metsing, who said the Principal Secretaries and
government officials also make up to the alleged hit list.
Mr. Metsing said the conspiracy was hatched at different
meetings convened by some public transport operators last
Sunday.
The synchronised meetings, he said, were in response to
government's plans to buy fleets of buses to augment the
current numbers which have proved to be inadequate, and for
taxis to undergo a mandatory Interpol clearance.
The minister added that government has learned that all
these acts of sabotage are to begin with a protest march in
the capital Maseru before the end of January, which is also
a prelude to an indefinite stay-away. The march is to be
staged in routes of the protestors' choice rather than those
provided by the police.
Mr. Metsing also said a fund has been set up to finance the
disturbances and to pay for legal costs of those who might
be apprehended.
Taxis have been specifically targeted for extortions, to be
enforced at selected locations.
Mr. Metsing concluded by reassuring the people that
government is committed to their safety and security, and
stop at nothing to protect them.
