The Leader of
the Zimbabwe opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC),
Mr. Morgan Tsvangarai paid a short visit to Lesotho on
Tuesday 13 May, 2008.
The purpose of his visit was to brief the Government of
Lesotho on the current situation in Zimbabwe following the
recently held elections in that country.
The discussions focused on the following issues:
MDC’s concern about the increasing acts of violence and
intimidation against the Zimbabwean citizens, in particular
the opposition MDC supporters;
The request of support from the Government of Lesotho, as
a member of SADC, in ensuring peaceful and fair conduct of
the forth-coming run-off presidential elections in Zimbabwe;
The appeal to SADC Member States to convene an
Extra-Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government,
to discuss the following issues:-
(A) Date of the envisaged run-off presidential elections;
(B) Minimum conditions for the run-off presidential
elections;
(C) Mechanisms for the transfer of power to the winning
party.
The Government of Lesotho undertook to attend the proposed
SADC Extra-Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government,
if it is convened by the current Chairperson of SADC, and to
support whatever decisions will be reached collectively by
the summit.
