PRESS RELEASE

The Leader of the Zimbabwe opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Mr. Morgan Tsvangarai paid a short visit to Lesotho on Tuesday 13 May, 2008.

The purpose of his visit was to brief the Government of Lesotho on the current situation in Zimbabwe following the recently held elections in that country.

The discussions focused on the following issues:

 MDC’s concern about the increasing acts of violence and intimidation against the Zimbabwean citizens, in particular the opposition MDC supporters;

 The request of support from the Government of Lesotho, as a member of SADC, in ensuring peaceful and fair conduct of the forth-coming run-off presidential elections in Zimbabwe;

 The appeal to SADC Member States to convene an Extra-Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, to discuss the following issues:-

(A) Date of the envisaged run-off presidential elections;
(B) Minimum conditions for the run-off presidential elections;
(C) Mechanisms for the transfer of power to the winning party.

The Government of Lesotho undertook to attend the proposed SADC Extra-Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government, if it is convened by the current Chairperson of SADC, and to support whatever decisions will be reached collectively by the summit.
