PM WARNS MEDIA
AGAINST DEFAMATION |
The Prime
Minister, Mr. Pakalitha Mosisili has warned the media
against misuse of the right to freedom of expression to
defame or character assassination in their reportage.
The Prime Minister made these remarks during the launch of
Radio Lesotho, Ultimate FM and Lesotho Television on Multi
choice – Digital Satellite Television (DSTV) in Maseru on
Monday.
Mr. Mosisili said it is the role of the media to act as
watchdogs and hold people, especially those in public
offices accountable on issues affecting the nation, but said
this should be done responsibly.
“Freedom of expression does not give you an opportunity to
defame others because all people have rights and should
therefore be respected,” he said.
He noted that in a democratic country like Lesotho, people's
rights should be observed, noting that the media should play
its role by achieving democracy.
He stressed the need for media to refrain from waging
campaigns of absolute disrespect and making unfounded
allegations about others as that would divide the nation,
whilst the media should unite Basotho.
“Avoid defaming people anytime, anyhow, anywhere and learn
to exercise your freedom responsibly bearing in mind the
fact that all people have rights,” he said.
Present at the occasion were Cabinet Ministers, dignitaries,
Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology staff
including journalists from different media houses and the
public.
