MDC READY FOR THE RUN-OFF – LEADER

Leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in Zimbabwe, Mr. Morgan Tsvangarai says his party is ready for the run-off in Presidential elections.

Speaking at the press conference in Maseru during his visit in the country, Mr. Tsvangarai said his party will enter the run-off but they need SADC to provide conditions that will allow an enabling environment that will give security and confidence to Zimbabweans.

'We belief that we have a two-way approach to the crises in Zimbabwe, which is either a dialogue or a run-off and because everyone in the region has chosen a route to going towards the run-off, we are prepared for it,' he added.

MDC Leader said however there have been attempts to convince ZANU-PF that it is necessary or desirable for negotiation settlement rather than to go for a run-off, but ZANU-PF seems not ready to accept the will of the people.

He expressed hope that SADC in its wisdom will tackle these problems, noting that they also want SADC to intervene to stop the current violence in Zimbabwe, which he said has affected the population in a massive way.

Asked whether his party has started campaigning for the run-off, Mr. Tsvangarai said there is no need for them to start campaigning because the date for the run-off has not yet been announced.

'And I do not regard that as a run-off but a confirmation of people's will and if we win, we will be accommodative of the previous government,' he said.

While in the country, Mr. Tsvangarai held talks with the Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Lesao Lehohla in the presence of Foreign Minister Mr. Mohlabi Tsekoa, Communications Minister Mr. Mothetjoa Metsing and the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. Motloheloa Phooko.

MDC Leader’s visit in the country follows the announcement of Presidential elections in Zimbabwe on Friday 2 May, 2008 in which there did not emerge a winner with sufficient majority to lead the government.
