M42 MILLION FOR CONSTRUCTION OF SCHOOLS |
The Government
of Japan has granted M42 million to assist the Lesotho
Government enhance construction of secondary schools in the
country.
According to information received from the Embassy of Japan
in Pretoria, the Notes for the grant assistance for the
construction of secondary schools were signed and exchanged
on Friday between the Ambassador of Japan to Lesotho Mr.
Akihiko Furuya and Ms. Mats'eliso Kumi the Charge d'
Affaires ad interim of the Kingdom of Lesotho to South
Africa.
It says with the grant, seven schools will be constructed,
one in each district of Leribe, Maseru, Berea, Quthing,
Botha-Bothe, Mokhotlong and Mafeteng. Each school will be
composed of six classrooms, a science laboratory,
principal's office, teachers' room, store room and toilet as
well as water supply facilities.
These schools will be the model schools in the said
districts and will provide a more conducive learning
environment for secondary school learners and teachers.
With this assistance Japan values the Lesotho government's
efforts to provide opportunities for the increasing number
of learners who wish to further their education after
successfully completing primary school and decided to extend
a grant for this cause.
Meanwhile Japan has long been a partner of Lesotho in its
efforts for development in many sectors.
And through a series of grant assists, Japan and Lesotho
have worked together for the improvement of education and
examples of this partnership include a water supply and
sanitation project in 1995, supply of infrastructural
support and educational equipment to Lesotho College of
Education in 2001 and a primary schools construction project
in 2004.
Japan has been the international leader of African
Development for more than a decade through the process of
the Tokyo Conference of African Development (TICAD) and it
will host the fourth summit of this process in May 2008
where it will work together with African partners including
Lesotho to strengthen the international commitment to
African Development.
