According to information received from the Embassy of Japan in Pretoria, the Notes for the grant assistance for the construction of secondary schools were signed and exchanged on Friday between the Ambassador of Japan to Lesotho Mr. Akihiko Furuya and Ms. Mats'eliso Kumi the Charge d' Affaires ad interim of the Kingdom of Lesotho to South Africa.

It says with the grant, seven schools will be constructed, one in each district of Leribe, Maseru, Berea, Quthing, Botha-Bothe, Mokhotlong and Mafeteng. These schools will be the model schools in the said districts and will provide a more conducive learning environment for secondary school learners and teachers.

With this assistance Japan values the Lesotho government's efforts to provide opportunities for the increasing number of learners who wish to further their education after successfully completing primary school and decided to extend a grant for this cause.

Meanwhile Japan has long been a partner of Lesotho in its efforts for development in many sectors.

And through a series of grant assists, Japan and Lesotho have worked together for the improvement of education and examples of this partnership include a water supply and sanitation project in 1995, supply of infrastructural support and educational equipment to Lesotho College of Education in 2001 and a primary schools construction project in 2004.

Japan has been the international leader of African Development for more than a decade through the process of the Tokyo Conference of African Development (TICAD) and it will host the fourth summit of this process in May 2008 where it will work together with African partners including Lesotho to strengthen the international commitment to African Development.
