EU, LESOTHO
COOPERATE WELL-DR PHOOKO |
Existing
relations between Lesotho and the European Union are of
fundamental importance to Basotho and the European Union.
This was said by the Minister in the Prime Minister's
office, Dr Motloheloa Phooko at the commemoration of the
Europe Day in Maseru on Friday.
Dr Phooko said it is the expectation of the people of
Lesotho that those who are entrusted with the responsibility
of nurturing and deepening this relationship should do so
with vigour without being distracted by issues outside the
scope of that relationship.
‘European Union has and continues to provide invaluable
support to Lesotho,’ he said, noting that the signing of the
country's Strategic Programme (CSP) and National Indicative
Programme (NIP) by Lesotho and European Commission is a
clear indication of good relations.
He added that the recent launching of the new EC-Lesotho
Cooperation Programme of 2008-2013, as well as the recent
visit of the European Commissioner for Trade, Mr. Peter
Mandelson also marked a milestone in the cooperation between
Lesotho and the European Union.
Speaking at the occasion, the Ambassador and head of
delegation to Lesotho, Mr. Peter Christiansen said the day
marks the first Europe day when people of countries, once
divided by the “Iron Curtain” could travel freely across
Europe, since the Schengen free travel area was expanded to
the east.
He said, 'This year marks the celebration of the tenth
anniversary of the European Monetary Union, which is one of
the EU strongest symbols.'
He remarked that Zimbabwe’s crisis remains a challenge and
major concern for neighbouring countries and for SADC's
future.
The establishment of the European Union followed the then
French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman call for Europe
countries to unite under European Institution that paved way
to the present European Union.
