SETSOTO STADIUM TO BE REVAMPED

The Government of Lesotho has resolved to reconstruct the only stadium in the country to upgrade it to international standard.

This was disclosed by the Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation Mr. Makalo Theko during the presentation of soccer kit to Likhopo F.C by Lesotho Sugar Packers (LSP) at Lesotho Sun on Friday, 26th January.

Mr. Theko said Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) delegation visited the country and inspected some sporting facilities and advised the government to upgrade the stadium.

He pointed out that the cabinet has already approved the idea and construction work will commence mid year as part of preparing for the forth coming soccer world cup in 2010 to be hosted in South Africa.

Furthermore, Mr. Theko noted that the government has also decided to improve sporting facilities throughout the country so that at least each of the ten districts has good playing facility.

The Principal Secretary also pledged that the government has also drafted the tax exemption bill which will allow businesses investing in sporting activities for tax exemption as an attempt to attract companies to fund such activities.

“This is part of promoting peace and stability in the country as participation in sports unite people from different backgrounds and gives a platform for interaction,” he added.

Setsoto stadium has a capacity of between 20 000 to 25 000 and accommodates various sporting activities such as soccer, track and field events including offices for several sporting associations.
