PARLIAMENTARIANS HEAD TO CPA CONFERENCE IN INDIA |
Four Members of Parliament
(MP's) will take part at the 53rd Commonwealth Parliamentary
Association (PCA)'s Conference and General Assembly to take
place in New Delhi, India from 21 and 30.
The Lesotho delegation comprises Speaker of the National
Assembly, Ms. Ntlhoi Motsamai, Mr. Nkhets'e Monyalotsa, Mr.
Thabo Motikoe and Senator, Professor Zachariah Mats'ela.
The Clerk to the National Assembly, Ms. Lebohang Ramohlanka
said the Lesotho team to India has been elected by some
members of Parliament in their capacity as members of the
Executive Committee of CPA for Lesotho Branch.
She said the committee is made up of leaders of political
parties who include the Leader of the House Mr. Lesao
Lehohla, Mr. Motsoahae Thabane and Mr. Thabo Motikoe.
Meanwhile, the conference, whose theme is 'Delivering
Democracy and Sustainable Development', will culminate
seminars and workshops.
The workshops will be on amongst others: Climate Change and
Global Warming: Policy Issues and Solutions, Parliamentary
Practice and Procedure: The need for reforms to secure
greater executive accountability as well as the role, rights
and responsibilities of the Opposition in the parliament.
CPA is an association of parliamentarians from the various
national, state, regional parliaments of the member
countries of the Commonwealth who, irrespective of gender,
race, religion or culture, are united by community of
interest, respect for the rule of law and individual rights
and freedoms, and by pursuit of the positive ideals of
parliamentary democracy.
Although closely associated, CPA is a separate organisation
from the Commonwealth, with its own separate institutions
and secretariat.
Its mission is to promote the advancement of parliamentary
democracy by enhancing knowledge and understanding of
democratic governance and by building an informed
parliamentary community, able to deepen the commonwealth
democratic commitment and to further co-operation among its
parliaments and legislatures.
