NUMBER OF
PARTIES INCREASES IN NATIONAL ASSEMBLY |
Lesotho
ruling party, Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD), has won
the general elections which were held on 17 February, 2007.
As a result of the elections outcome, eleven political
parties will be represented in the National Assembly when
the Parliament opens for its first session this year.
The Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) will have a strong
majority in the House, with 61 seats from constituency
elections and an extra 21 from proportional representation
on account of its alliance with the National Independent
Party NIP).
According to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the
All- Basotho Convention (ABC) will be the main opposition in
Parliament. ABC has the second most number of seats with 17
from the constituencies plus 10 of proportional
representation on account of its alliance with the Lesotho
Workers Party (LWP).
New polls will be held in the Makhaleng constituency because
of the death of a candidate from the Alliance of Congress
Parties (ACP) prior to holding of February 17 elections. ACP
took one constituency during the elections.
Basotho National Party (BNP) will have three proportional
representation seats in Parliament while the new parties;
Basotho Batho Democratic Party (BBDP) and Basotho Democratic
National Party (BDNP) will have a seat each.
