LESOTHO
PARTICIPATES IN WORLD CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE |
Lesotho is
currently taking part at a two-week annual climate change
conference that commenced in Bali, Indonesia on December 03,
2007.
The purpose of the conference, which ends today (Friday) is
to lay foundation for agreements on enhanced global action
to fight climate change in the period after 2012, the year
the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol expires.
According to a press statement from the Ministry of Natural
Resources the conference is attended by eight Heads of
Government, Ministers from over 150 countries and Leaders of
Intergovernmental Organisations.
Lesotho delegation is lead by Minister Monyane Moleleki and
consists of Minister Lebohang Nts'inyi, Messrs Ts'eliso
Sekoli, Motsamai Damane and Motsomi Maletjane.
On addressing the conference, the Lesotho delegation
reminded the conference that in 1990, climate change was
regarded as a myth and unreal, but now 17 years later, the
world feels that not enough is being done to address climate
change.
The delegation according to the release further mentioned
that Lesotho is suffering the consequences of climate change
and explained how this year saw a most devastating
phonological drought that was followed by heavy rains that
are still continuing.
