JOURNALISTS
URGED TO PARTNER WITH GOVERNMENT |
A visiting
Political Science Professor from George Washington in
America, Dr Steven Livingstone says responsible media
reports in a manner that does not discriminate and
perpetuates divisions, but rather builds.
Addressing journalists at a one-day workshop organised by
the American
Embassy Lesotho, Dr Livingston said it is the responsibility
of
journalists to partner with government and forge links to
advance development of the country.
"Partnership between the government and journalists could
contribute towards developing the country," he said.
Dr Livingston noted that journalists are mandated to play a
leading role in developing their respective countries hence
should be seen as problem solvers rather than being seen as
problem makers.
On the other hand, he urged the government to be transparent
and be accountable to the society as well as to give
information to the journalists for the benefit of the
society.
The Professor noted that allowing media access to
information will further strengthen relations between the
government and the journalists and so enhance democracy.
The workshop that was attended by journalists from private
and government owned media institutions was aimed at
bringing journalists together so to find ways of enhancing
cordial relations between them and the government.
