COMMUNITY TO CARE FOR ENVIRONMENT |
The Minister of
Health and Social Welfare Dr. Mphu Ramatlapeng says the
Government trusts Basotho to take care of their environment.
Dr Ramatlapeng was speaking on behalf of the Minister of
Tourism and Environment and Culture, on the commemoration of
the Environment Day at Muela on Friday.
Dr. Ramatlapeng said Lesotho is blessed with unique
features, adding that if Basotho could be committed enough
to protect their environment, they could use it to make a
living through tourism.
The minister of health came out strongly over burning of
grass, which took place around the Muela area and other
areas an in various parts of the country, saying the
tendency kills the indigenous plants that have become
extinct in other countries, but existing in Lesotho.
Dr. Ramatlapeng, said it is high time that people do
everything in their power to engage in soil conservation
activities to protect the soil, wetlands and other natural
resources.
Speaking at the same occasion, the Acting Principal Chief of
Botha-Bothe, Chief Joele Mopeli and the Member of Parliament
for Motete constituency, Mr. Mohlomi Monyane both stressed
the need to bring those people, who burn grass and rangeland
to book.
Mr. Monyane said it is the responsibility of the local
authorities as they are tasked with the responsibility of
developing their areas and protect developments in their
respective areas.
As part of the commemoration the exhibitions made of grass,
animal skin were inspected. Students who wrote best poems
and compositions on environment were also awarded prizes.
The occasion was graced by choral music and traditional
songs and dances.
