Denvertech and Telecom Lesotho put Maseru residents on cyberspace

Telecom Lesotho (TL) and Denver Technologies have set up an internet facility at the State Library. TL provided ten computers and Internet access while Denvertech coordinated the implementation. Internet services shall be made available to library patrons at no charge during the Christmas break till the end of January. It is anticipated that students will particularly take advantage of the offering.

In addition to the internet service, four scrabble boards have also been made available. This is to facilitate the establishment of a scrabble club at the library. The objective of the scrabble exercise is to assist students to improve their spelling, vocabulary and creative writing skills. This shall, in turn, improve the pass rate for English Language at COSC level. The desire is to launch a national drive to provide scrabble boards to high schools nation-wide. If other corporate bodies jump on the bandwagon, it would be easier to achieve a target of 1,000 boards by the end of 2007.

Speaking at an official hand-over ceremony on the 21st December, the Chief Executive Officer of Denvertech, Mr Lebeko Sello said: “It is important that we do all we can to help society have access to empowering technologies such as the internet. Today’s youth are particularly hard-pressed to embrace technology in order to play a role in the knowledge economy.”

Telecom Lesotho’s Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Mosuoe Mapetla, expressed hope that the internet facility would be put to good use by the general public. He commented that: “If students utilise the internet to access useful information, they then make it easier to challenge other business leaders to exercise corporate social responsibility through similar endeavours.”

The computers and boards were received by the Minister of Tourism, Environment and Culture, Hon. L Ntšinyi. In her brief remarks she said: “This is a benevolent gesture by Denvertech and Telecom Lesotho. This shall go a long towards assisting Basotho to tap the immense benefits offered by the internet.
