CIVIL SOCIETY
ENCOURAGED TO PROMOTE GOOD GOVERNANCE |
Civil Society
has been encouraged to participate in local and national
issues for the promotion of good governance in the country.
Speaking at a two day African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM)
sensitization workshop held at Manthabiseng Convention
Centre in Maseru on Wednesday, the acting Minister of
Foreign Affairs, Mr. Semano Sekatle said Civil Society plays
a significant role in strengthening democracy, hence the
need to further improve their participation.
Mr. Sekatle described APMR as an instrument initiated by the
African leaders to enhance democracy within the region,
adding that government is committed to create a conducive
environment for the Civil Society to take part in national
issues particularly those intended to address socio-economic
problems.
He commended the Irish government for the financial support
contributed to Lesotho to sensitize communities on APRM and
strengthening of the Civil Society.
Speaking at the same occasion the Irish Ambassador to
Lesotho, Mr. Patrick Fay said there is a need to support the
Civil Society for improvement of peace, security, good
governance and economic growth.
Mr. Fay said a strong civil society plays a vital role to
promote an effective and successful democracy in a country.
'Promotion of good governance is a long term effort that
needs to be undertaken by different sectors of the
community', he said.
APRM is a voluntary self-monitoring process designed to
promote the adoption of policies, practices and standards
that will lead to political stability, high economic growth
and sustainable development.
The instrument was launched in Lesotho by the Right
Honourable the Prime Minister Mr. Pakalitha Mosisili in
November last year.
The workshop ends on Thursday.
