000 BASOTHO HAVE REGISTERED FOR POLLS |
There
are 919 444 eligible Basotho who have registered for general
elections which will be held on the 17th February, 2007 in
Lesotho.
Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Public Relations
Officer Mr. Tuoe Hantsi said there are 16 750 new voters who
have registered since the 2002 general elections. He said
623 names which were omitted from the roll will be included
in the final roll prior to elections. He pledged that the
final roll will be given to political parties before
election day.
Mr. Hantsi urged Basotho to go to the registration sites to
check their names for any mistakes so that they could be
corrected for the coming general elections to be credible.
The IEC officer said those who had registered and their
names appear on the voters' roll but have lost their
registration cards can use either a valid passport, driver's
license or an official witness to vote.
'This is in accordance with the National Assembly No.1
Amendment Act of
2001,' he remarked.
There are 19 political parties contesting the February 17
general elections.
