BROADCASTERS URGED TO OBSERVE OBJECTIVITY

The Minister of Communications, Science and Technology, says the government regards electronic media as an important role player in disseminating information of public interests, but however, encouraged them to report without bias.

Speaking at a one-day workshop on the role of broadcasting in a democratic dispensation, Mr. Mothetjoa Metsing said, with the help of all stakeholders in the media industry, freedom of expression, media diversity and self sufficiency must be promoted so that benefits of democracy are realized in the country.

He said it is obligatory for every broadcaster to observe the code of practice as stipulated by the Broadcasting Rules of 2004.

He urged broadcasters to report factual and well-researched news that portray good taste, decency and encouraged them to avoid discrimination of anybody on basis of race, religion or political affiliation.

The Minister said, with their skills, broadcasters could help nurture Lesotho's infant democracy which he said is faced with many political, economic and social challenges.

Speaking at the occasion, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA)-Councilor, Professor Jacobus Van Rooyen said in a democratic dispensation, freedom of expression can be practiced better if journalists balance their information on matters of public interest.

He therefore expressed hope that after the workshop, broadcasters will observe a positive change in the quality of content for broadcasting stations.

The main purpose of the workshop, which was organized by the Lesotho Telecommunications Authority, was to remind broadcasters about LTA Broadcasting Rules of 2004.
