AGRIC HOLDS CAMPAIGNS AGAINST RABIES

The Department of Agriculture and Food Security in Mokhotlong will hold a series of rabies campaigns from Monday 13th August 2007 at Thabang, Malefiloane and Phahameng Resource Centres in Mokhotlong.

The Acting District Agricultural Officer, Ms. Nthabiseng Shapung, said the purpose of the campaign is to reduce the spread of rabies, which is a dog illness that can also be harmful to human beings because it is transmittable from dogs to human beings.

She indicated that rabies is also transmittable to other livestock, especially cattle. Meanwhile, Ms Shapung said the exercise will be undertaken by agricultural staff, adding that all the personnel have been trained in the vaccination process.

She stated that it is important to embark on the campaign because most people’s lives in the district depend entirely on livestock.

Ms. Shapung said the campaign started on July 16 and it is a continuous process. Since the campaign started in July, it has covered the resource centres of Lehlohla, Libibing and Mapholaneng.
