VETERANS HONOURED ON WORLD POST DAY

Ten former Post Office employees who worked between late 1950's to 1970's were honoured during the commemoration of the World Post Day held at the Post Office on Monday.

The formers employees were all males and they included the former Minister of Posts and Transport, Mr. David Mochochoko as well as the first Mosotho Director of Postal Services Mr. Paanya Phoofolo.

They were presented with blankets, walking sticks and postal services honorary certificates and post offices T shirts and Caps to honour, for their hard work and contribution which has seen the post office where it is today.

Officiating at this occasion, Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology Mr. Ts'eliso 'Mokela urged the current Post Office staff to work hard in order to be honoured in the same manner some day.

He urged them to handle monies with care, knowing that all the mails do not belong to them but to the public.

"Many public servants nowadays have a tendency of taking public funds and use them for their own benefit, forgetting that theirs is to transfer the money to its intended recipients," he emphasised.

Mr. 'Mokela said the veterans are honored as part of acknowledging their contribution and as a gesture to thank them for the foundation they have laid for the post office.

He told those who were not honoured today not to despair, as they will be considered in future.

Speaking at this ceremony, Director of Posts Mrs. 'Mamahele Radebe said the day is very important to the history of Post Office worldwide as it is the day when the Universal Postal Union was established to ensure that post offices are regulated in the same manner.

She stated that their aim is to take services to the remote areas using whatever mode of transport like donkeys to 'reach everyone everywhere'.

The Director said the veterans worked hard during their time under the strict watchful eye of the British rule who discriminated the natives.

Those who were honoured included Messers Moqekela Mohlotsane, Julius Tlebere, Molefi Masia, Henry Masole, Tau Moholobela, Motlatsi Kotola, Lillo Khanyapa, Carrington Letsoela, David Mochochoko and Paanya Phoofolo.

World Post Day is marked annually worldwide to observe the establishment of the Universal Post Union which was formed on the same day in 1874.
