The local Under 23 soccer team faces an acid
test when they face their Senegalese counterparts in the opening game of the
Eight Nation soccer tournament at Katlehong stadium, South Africa on January
7, according to a soccer administrator.
The tournament, which will be played at various venues, starts this Saturday
and ends on January 16.
Senegal is a threat to the local boys since they have tall and physical
players, according to Lesotho Football Association (LEFA) spokesperson Ts'iu
Monne.
They would, however, give the tournament their best shot, aiming to at least
reach the semi-finals. The spirit within camp is high and there were no
serious injuries as those with some injury are recovering well.
Their next game will be against China at the same venue the next day before
wrapping up Group A's qualifying fixture with an assignment against the host
country South Africa at George Thabe stadium on January 10.
Interim Under 23 coach Seepheephe 'Mochine'
Matete has meanwhile welcomed the draw as good for his charges’ preparations
for international competitions. China will be the toughest opponents as they
are unfamiliar with their style of play.
Group B is made up of Zimbabwe, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Mozambique and only
two top teams from each group will proceed to the semi-finals.
The overall winners will take home a trophy and gold medals.
