May 23 - A member of the Lesotho
Mounted Police Service (LMPS) 32, charged with murder of an ex-military
officer, 40, is expected to appear before court soon after police
investigations are completed. The police spokesperson, Superintendent George Mofolo said that being the civil servant, the police had to have directive from the Director of Public Prosecution before formal charges in court. He said that the suspect allegedly shot the deceased, Charles Lefosa following the misunderstanding sparked by alcohol and the loss of Orlando Pirates, a South African football club, to its rivals Kaiser Chiefs as they were watching at the one of the local bars, Caltex in Hlotse. The police officer said that the deceased allegedly mistakenly stepped near the suspect’s glass of liquor which fell as a result and led to exchange of words followed by a fight and gunshot. He noted that the loss of Pirates to Chiefs is also alleged to have contributed to the case. Superintendent Mofolo appealed to the community of Hlotse and all people affected by the case to be calm noting that the law will take its toll as no one is above the law. He also appealed that relationship between the police and the public is vital in crime prevention thus acknowledging that the case has defaced the image of police, which they are working hard to restore. Meanwhile the case caused uproar among members of the community expressing lack of confidence in terms of safety and security to the Leribe police. |
