NETBALL, BASKETBALL TEAMS WIPE AWAY BASOTHO TEARS

Windhoek, June 29 - Lesotho's Netball and men’s Basketball teams have wiped away Basotho tears and made them happy after winning their matches respectively at the on going Supreme Council for Sports in Africa (SCSA) Zone six Youth Games at different venues on Wednesday.

Netball team beat Angolan counterparts by a convincing 54 to 10 in a game played at the Multi-purpose Youth centre and brought hope that Lesotho could return home with something in hand.

In an interview, the team’s coach Mrs. ‘Maseabata Makhetha said the win has put them in a good frame of mind ahead of game against Zambia which she said is likely to be a balanced one.

Mrs. Makhetha said the players were nervous in their opening encounter against Namibia as most of them are still young and inexperience at international level.

“I am really shocked by the way these young players have adapted so quickly and this is the team for the future that the country could look up to,” she highlighted.

On the other hand, the men’s Basketball team also redeemed Basotho’s dwindling reputation by humiliating the host team 83 to 67 in a match played indoors at the University of Namibia.

Speaking in a post match interview, the happily looking coach Mr. Thetso Mathetha said the victory against Namibia was emotional as the host had beaten Makoanyane XI as well as the netball team the previous day.

However he said there was still room for improvement as they could have beaten their opponents by a bigger margin had they converted their free flow shots at goal, the department that needs to be worked on.

Mr. Mathetha said the victory will also boost the players’ confidence prior to meeting their next opponents.

Assistant Minister of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation Mr. Hlonepho Nts’ekhe was relieved after this game and said this might be the beginning of good things to come for Lesotho teams.

He hoped that his presence could have motivated and influenced the players to perform better hence the victory.
