Mohale Dam Overspills

The Mohale Dam is overflowing for the firt time since its construction under Phase 1B of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project in 1998 and completion in 2002.

LHDA Dam Safety and Surveillance Engineer Mr. Fobokoane 'Mota said the spill that started on February 13, had been anticipated two years after the dam’s construction  but had not happened because of the severe drought between 2003 and 2005.

The dam has a capacity of one billion litres of water, the Dam Safety Officer said. He assured communities living near the dam that the overflow will not affect them as the water will immediately be transferred to the Katse Dam..
