chairperson of the Bureau for the Conference. The meeting, which took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, was convened by the Chairman of the African Union Commission (AUC) Professor Alphu Oumar Konare, for the AU Information and Communication ministers on the establishment of a Pan African Radio and Television Channel. Among key policy, legal, institutional and technical issues debated during the plenary session on Wednesday were those concerning the mission, programming content, broadcast language, governance structure, funding and technology. The main focus of the deliberation centered on identifying the most appropriate possible funding model to ensure that the proposed channel becomes sustainable once it becomes operational. The initiative for the establishment of a Pan-African Radio and Television Channel was conceived at the Assembly of the African Union in Abuja, Nigeria, in January 2005. |
