Maseru, June 5 - Political party leaders in the country have strongly condemned the assassination of the member of parliament for the Basotho National Party (BNP), Mr Bereng Sekhonyana who was shot dead at his family house on Friday last week. The Deputy Prime Minister Lesao Lehohla issued a statement on behalf of government strongly condemning the act and even reiterating government’s commitment to bring stability in the country that the police will work hard to bring the assassins to book. The leader of the Lesotho Workers party (LWP) Mr Macaefa Billy, said incidents such as this are uncalled for. He reiterated that if there are misunderstandings within the party, there are diplomatic ways to deal with such. On the same note, the leader of Popular Front for Democracy (PFD) Mr Lekhetho Rakuoane also condemned the assassination saying he fails to understand how a person of Mr Sekhonyana’s calibre can be followed to his home and be killed. He said this is a shocking incident, and it insinuates that they as politicians and their family members are at risk. Mr Rakuoane said it is their hope that the police will work swiftly to bring the culprits to book. Meanwhile, the National Executive committee of BNP has issued a statement with regard to the matter, saying it is shocked by the fatal shooting of a party member, Mr Bereng Sekhonyana. In the statement BNP affirms its stand that no one has the right to attain objectives by means which are outside the parameters of the law. The committee further undertakes to cooperate in all respect with law enforcement authorities towards the speedy apprehension of the culprits in this matter. The assassination of Mr Bereng Sekhonyana comes a day after the suspension of five BNP MPs including the leader of the party Major General Metsing Justin Lekhanya from parliament. The suspension came as a result of a row in the national assembly, when Mr Sekhonyana was commissioned to a conference in Botswana by the speaker of the national assembly. The BNP was not satisfied with this matter saying the speaker of the National Assembly was supposed to consult with the leadership of the party before sending any of its members to any assignment. Following this matter, the BNP protested to parliament to present their grievances and in the process the speaker was insulted and even threatened by the BNP protesters. |
