JC Book Rental Scheme Launched in Mountain Districts

The Ministry of Education and Training has extended the launch of the Junior Certificate level book rental scheme to the mountain districts. Mokhotlong, Thaba-Tseka, Quthing and Qacha’s Nek have now joined the rest of the country in benefiting from the World Bank sponsored project.

The Minister of Education, Mr. Mohlabi Tsekoa and Assistant Minister Mrs. Malijane Maqelepo visited the districts on January 30 and February 1to launch the project. They reiterated Government‘s commitment to help Basotho children access quality education.

A recent study commissioned by the Ministry has shown that the high failure rate at the JC level was the result of a lack of textbooks because many parents were not able to afford the books for their children.

Under the scheme, parents pay M220.00 a year towards rental of the particular year’s textbooks. The money goes to a revolving fund.

The JC book rental scheme was launched in Maseru when schools reopened in January.
