Maseru, June 19 - The
Lesotho Red Cross Society (LRCS) says it is important that First Aid be
taught in schools so that children grow up with the knowledge. Speaking at a five-day First Aid training for girl guides at the Lesotho Girl Guides Association (LGGA)'s premises on Monday, LRCS's First Aid Trainer Mrs. 'Maikhetheleng Makotoko said this knowledge could reduce the number of deaths as people would be in a position to help others in occurrence of injury or illness. Mrs. Makotoko reiterated a need for First Aid to be taught in schools as it has already been included in the school syllabi. She added that First Aid is given to preserve life, promote recovery and prevent the condition from worsening hence a need to be taught at early stage. She described it as a skilled application of accepted principles of treatment on the occurrence of an injury or burden illness using available facilities at the time before transferring the victim to hospital. The LGGA Field Trainer Mrs.'Matebello Mokhahlane explained that the purpose of the training is to equip the trainees with necessary skills of applying First Aid in schools and in the villages. She said after the training, the participants will be expected to share the same skills with other girl guides as the youth easily understand each other. She added that they believe the training will help participants as knowledge acquired at the earliest stage of learning is not easily or quickly forgotten, so girl guides will grow up knowing all the tactics needed in applying First Aid techniques After the training, participants will be provided with First Aid kits to enhance their skills. |
