-- Population census has a
long history all over the world even Biblically from the days when Jesus
Christ was born, adding even then every citizen was supposed to go back to
his country of birth to be counted. Mr. Mosisili said this when him and his family were being counted at the State House on Monday. Mr. Mosisili has also thanked the enumerators for an opportunity that his family has been granted as Lesotho. He pointed out that Population Census is crucial for any government when it comes to developmental formulation of policies for the next ten years. 'Any government should know well ahead of time how many people need basics like health facilities, clean water and how many old people are supposed to get pension as well as children who are supposed to go to school including those who have finished their studies and need jobs,' he observed. Just like the King, he also urged the public to welcome the enumerators to enable them to carry out this task with ease. Dr. Majoro had started by introducing the enumerators as well as the UNFPA officials and how the counting ought to be conducted The 2006 Population Census was officially launched with the counting of the King and his family at the Royal Palace on Sunday and it is expected to end on April 22. In 1996, Lesotho population was estimated at two million and after ten years now it is expected to be over 2.2 million. |
