Maseru, June 14 - Basotho National
Party (BNP) leadership should come out clean about the death of its senior
member in the National Assembly Chief Bereng Sekhonyana, Prime Minister Mr
Pakalitha Mosisili has advised. Speaking at the memorial service of the late Chief Sekhonyana held at the ‘Manthabiseng National Convention Centre on Wednesday, the Prime Minister said unless BNP leadership comes out and assists police with investigations that could lead to the arrest of the murderers of Chief Sekhonyana, a ‘cast of a dark cloud’ would still be hanging over the party. “How come that even a week did not lapse after the matter of BNP and Chief Sekhonyana in the National Assembly was completed that he was murdered?” he asked. Prime Minister appealed not only to police but to Basotho at large with information to assist in the arrest the perpetrators so that the law could take its course. He condemned the brutal murdering of the Member of Parliament saying it has tarnished the good reputation of the country internationally. Furthermore he expressed concern that his son was also assassinated five years ago but no arrests have been made, also citing that the Foreign Minister Mr. Monyane Moleleki was also shot but several months have past without his assailants being brought to book. He pointed out that it is only after the perpetrators have been arrested that their families, friends and Basotho could be consoled. Mr, Mosisili described Chief Sekhonyana as a smart and diplomatic kind of politician who had contributed immensely in the peace processes and development of the country. Speaking at the same occasion, Principal Chief of Thaba Bosiu Chief Khoabane Theko said they have been discomfited by Chief Sekhonyana's killing which came when they believed that peace was prevailing in the country. He pointed out that they have undergone many trainings on political tolerance and conflict management but it seems that there is still a long way to go in that respect. Chief Khoabane called on the Prime Minister to do something about the killers of Chief Sekhonyana and his son Maile Mosisili who were assasinated but no arrests have not yet been made. However he pointed out that it is high time that Basotho resort to negotiations and not violence in times of differences and to address conflicts. Other speakers included the leader of the House Mr. Lesao Lehohla, president of Senate Chief Lejaha, Chairman of Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Mr. Leshele Thoahlane and family members. Chief Sekhonyana was born on 14/04/1943 and is survived by six children, his wife and mother. He was laid to rest at Kokobela village this Sunday. He was murdered at his home on June 02 at around 20h30 by unknown criminals with 18 bullets, and 7.65, 9mm and AK47 shells of ammunition were found at the spot. |
