Anti Graft Body's Powers to Increase

The Directorate on Corruption and Economic Offences will be able to probe the private sector after amendment of the Prevention of Corruption and Economic Offences Act, spokesperson Mr. Litelu Ramokhoro, announced on January 3, 2005.

The Prevention of Corruption and Economic Offences Amendment Bill of 2005, which will among other things extend the national anti-graft body’s powers, is to be presented before Parliament this year.

The DCEO's powers are presently limited to the public sector in its various categories, and although the Directorate has received acclaim for its success, it has also come under fire for being unable to do anything about the corruption in business and other sectors.

The proposed amendment has been approved by Cabinet and the Bill itself is expected to be tabled in Parliament anytime by the Minister of Justice, Mr. Ramokhoro said.
