| Taxi Driver Gets One year in Prison | |
| Trying
to create a reputation for oneself as a "bad dude" means never getting out
of scrapes, most of which will be with the law. The Botha-Bothe Magistrate
Court has sentenced Taole Mabe (28) of Ha Belo to a year's imprisonment or a
fine of M1 000 after finding him guilty of refusing to be arrested by
police. Mabe was also sentenced to a five months jail term or a fine of M500 for parking a taxi in a prohibited area. Both sentences are to run concurrently. Finding Mabe guilty, Magistrate Mpho Marakabei observed that taxi drivers have the bad tendency of doing whatever they want without considering other people. The courts of law will not tolerate the insults and demeaning statements from the taxi drivers to the police. It is time people learnt respect for the law, she said. According to evidence, Mabe parked his taxi in a prohibited area, refusing to listen to a reprimand by the police. He only returned with an apology later and at the behest of his employer, the owner of the taxi. 09 February 2005 |
