Sephuthi Cultural Day to be Held in Quthing

An effort is being made not to let regional dialects be overwhelmed and perhaps die. A  Sephuthi cultural day will be held for the first time at the Liphakoe sports ground in Quthing  next week Thursday, August 11.

Baphuthi were brought together by Chief Moorosi in 1620 and comprise two clans: Mat'seza and Mabholane. They are mostly found in Quthing and some areas of Mohale's Hoek and Qacha's Nek.

The day will be celebrated as part of efforts to reenergise Sephuthi language and culture nationally, spokesperson for the promotion committee, Mr. Mabitle Moorosi said

He said there will be performances of Sephuthi traditional dances, indigenous sports such as
morabaraba, drama and the history of Baphuthi as an ethnic group in the district. one of the biggest challenges they face is having the language written down and eventually recognised officially, he said.

The day will be funded by UNESCO.
