SADC Countries Give New Life to Postal Sector

A three day conference of SADC ministers and postal operators is underway in Durban, South Africa where participants are looking at ways and means to revive the dying postal sector in the SADC region.

Thirteen countries from the SADC region are represented at the conference. The main objective is to draw up a four year strategy to harmonise and revive the postal sector in the region.

Minister of Communications, Science and Technology, Mr. Motsoahae Thomas Thabane, speaking at the conference, said with the advent of modern technology in neighbouring countries such as Lesotho and Swaziland, the postal sector has been neglected. Lesotho has introduced the PostBank to reach rural communities, he said.

The conference will also deliberate on other issues such as competitiveness and the building of postal infrastructure.
