Telecom Lesotho has launched the Lekomo Flexi a facility “combining the technologies of mobile and fixed line telecommunications” to enable delivery of services to the remote areas of Lesotho that have previously been unreachable. The one million Maloti project was launched in Semonkong by the Minister of Communications, Science and Technology, Mr. Motsoahae Thomas Thabane on August 12. Lekomo – Flexi provides potential telephone users with fixed landline service using a handset that is similar to a cellular phone. It has a slight drawback though in that, as the Telecom Lesotho CEO Adri van der Veer himself admitted, handsets have to be charged in order to function and therefore best functions in areas that have electric power. Announcing plans to launch a similar service at Mapholaneng, Mokhotlong, Telecom Lesotho CEO Van der veer described the launch as a major step forward by Telecom Lesotho to provide a solution to the challenge of providing communications to the underserved rural areas of Lesotho, many of which have previously had no access to telecommunication services at all. Mr. Van der Veer announced that there were already more than 300 customers using the new facility. The project is a joint venture between Telecom Lesotho and Econet Ezi~Cell Lesotho. 15 August 2005 |
