Lawyers Regard Molise Case "Hot Potatoes", He Says
Former second lieutenant Phakiso Molise finds it difficult to secure the services of a lawyer because he is considered "hot potatoes", he told the Maseru Magistrate Court on March 29 where he appeared on a charge of escaping from lawful custody.

Responding to a statement by Chief Magistrate Mr. Molefi Makara that he was free to apply for bail and be legally represented, Molise confirmed his wish for legal representation though he also mentioned his dire financial situation. Another problem was that some lawyers were reluctant to represent him as his cases were "hot potatoes."

Molise also asked to be furnished with statements of those witness to testify against him. Prosecutor Ms. Thembile Dlangamandla said she would do everything in her ability, including consultation with the Registrar of the High Court and the Chief Justice to establish whether the he magistrate's court could assist Second Lieutenant Molise to get a lawyer. The witnesses' statements were his right, she said.

Reading Molise's charge sheet, the Chief Magistrate said the facts are that Second Lieutenant Molise escaped at Queen Elizabeth II hospital on August 07, 2003, where he had been taken for medical treatment.

The accused should get a lawyer who would turn up for all hearings, as experience has taught the Chief Magistrate that some lawyers are reluctant to take cases to their logical end.

Molise was remanded in custody and was ordered to appear before court on April 12. He is already serving a 15 year jail term.

Meanwhile a 37 year-old man of Leribe, Thabiso Mothobi appeared before the same court for having assisted Molise to escape from prison. Mothobi is also standing trial in connection with the murder of the regional manager of Precious Garments factory, Mr. Peter Mokheseng, who was murdered on March 21, 2004 at Qoaling.
