Malebo Retires from the Leadership of the MFP

  Leader of Marematlou Freedom Party (MFP), Mr. Moeketse Malebo, has announced that he will not be standing for re-election into the leadership of the party this year.

Announcing this to the media on January 3, Mr Malebo (77) said he would however remain a Member of Parliament until the end of his term in 2007, the year of the next general elections. He was leaving the leadership reins in the more capable hands of more energetic and youthful hands who will lead the party into the forthcoming Local Government elections.

Declining to name his successor, the MFP leader noted however that it would be somebody not new within the structures of the party.

He  said some his achievements included the adoption of a new electoral model for the country, the Mixed Member Proportional Representation system, by the Interim Political Authority (IPA).  He also encouraged the formation of parliamentary bodies such as the Public Accounts Committee both as a Senator and as a Member of the National Assembly.
 

Mr. Malebo has been leader of the MFP since 1992.
