| Makoanyane XI Win in Benin | |
|
Lesotho beat Angola 2-1 in Group B of the African Youth Championships in
Benin on Wednesday, while leaders Morocco drew 2-2 with Egypt.
The country, competing in its first ever continental finals, achieved a famous victory through goals from Dlomo Monaphathi and Bokang Mothoana. "This win is very important for us but now we must work towards qualifying for the next round," said an ecstatic Seepheephe "Mochine" Matete, the Makoanyane XI coach. Both strikes came late in the first half, and followed Manuel Zando's opener for Angola in the 28th minute. The Angolans can no longer qualify for the semi-finals as they have no points from two games, while both Morocco and Egypt have four with just one tie left. The battle for places in the last four will go down to the wire as three teams go into the final day of group matches on Sunday with a chance of reaching the semi-finals. Makoanyane XI meet their Egyptian counterparts on January 23 before the semi-finals kick off on January 26 with the winner of Group A against the runner up in Group B and the winner of Group B against the runner up in Group A. 20 January 2005 |
