Lesotho is ready and willing to implement and uphold the Kyoto Protocol on
climate change, which comes into force in mid-February, Director of the
Lesotho Meteorological Services (LMS), Mr Ts'eliso Sekoli, has confirmed. Lesotho is a signatory to the treaty, which requires nations to cut back on harmful greenhouse emissions that cause global warming. The Director of meteorological services said the country stands to benefit from the treaty as it will not only get assistance to implement environment-friendly projects but also be introducing new technologies into the country. These benefits can be expected to be seen between 2008 and 2012, he said. Mr. Sekoli was elected Vice Chairman of the Bureau of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change at a conference held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in December 2004. He will represent the country at the launching of the Protocol in Kyoto, Japan, on February 16. 27 January 2005 |
