A government-controlled high school and a branch of the Lesotho College of Education are to be built in the Thaba Tseka district soon, the Minister of Education and Training, Mr. Mohlabi Tsekoa has announced.

Speaking during a tour of the district on February 2, Mr Tsekoa said arrangements, including the identification of a contractor to build the school, are advanced. A branch of the Lesotho College of Education offer science, mathematics and information technology courses, was also due to be established in the district.

The Ministry of Education intends to introduce an amendment to the Education Act to allow for the engagement of school principals on a contract basis, possibly five year renewable contracts. This will enable the Ministry to appoint principals based on their performance, he said.

Mr Tsekoa said as part of efforts to promote provision of quality education, the Ministry has invited stakeholders to share ideas regarding the review the Education Act No. 10 of 1995 and the
Education Amendment Act of 1996.

He suggested that the Education Act should include free and compulsory primary education as there were still some 15 percent of children out of school despite the introduction of free primary education.
