The
Kyoto Protocol on climate change will be formally launched in Kyoto, Japan
on February 17. The event will also mark the coming into force of the
Protocol.
The Director of Lesotho
Meteorological Services, Mr. Ts'eliso Sekoli, will represent Lesotho at the
launching of the Protocol, promulgated in 1997 and acceded to by the country
in 2001.
A statement from the Lesotho Meteorological Services said the protocol is
important to the country because it offers opportunities for the
introduction of environment-friendly projects. It also offers an
opportunity for technology transfer, while helping Lesotho to adapt to
climate change.
It is expected that the Japanese Minister of Environment, Mr Yuriko Koike
will attend the event, while keynote speeches will be made by Ms Joke
Waller-Hunter, Executive Secretary for the United Nations (UN) Framework
Convention on Climate Change, and Kenya's Deputy Environment Minister, Nobel
Peace Laureate Professor Wangari Maathai.
