Further Attempts at a Harmonised SADC Customs Union
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat has organised a one week workshop on tariff cataloguing, to be held in Maseru from April 25 to 29, the Lesotho Revenue Authority has announced.

LRA International Liaison Officer Ms Limpho Debeshe said the workshop, held for customs administrations within the SADC region, "is pursuant to the SADC/European Union (EU) project on capacity building and regional integration amongst customs administrations within the SADC
region."

It aims at providing a world class service in the SADC region by harmonizing and simplifying procedures and instruments for efficient and effective customs service delivery. This will be the third in a series of workshops coordinated by the SADC Secretariat on drafting of the common customs tariff categorisation to be used by the SADC Customs Union, envisage to be operational by
the year 2010.

Uniform interpretation of tariff nomenclature and common classification of goods within the region also facilitates international trade, she said.
