Group of 77 Summit in Doha

The Prime Minister, Mr. Pakalitha Mosisili is to attend the second South Summit of the Group of 77 and China, to be held in Doha, Qatar, from June 14 to 16.  The Prime Minister’s delegation will include the First Lady, Mrs. ‘M’athato Mosisili; the Foreign Minister, Mr. Monyane Moleleki and other senior officials. They leave the country on June 12.

The Summit will review progress towards implementing Chapter IV of the “South South Cooperation” agreement’s Havana Programme of Action of April 2001. Preceding the Plenary Session of the UN National Assembly, the Summit allows members states to reach consensus on various economic and social issues.

The Group of 77  was established by the signatories to the “joint declaration of  77 countries” made at the end of the First Session of the United nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on June 15, 1964.

Although its membership has grown to 132 countries, the grouping has retained the original name because of its historic significance.
