Disappointing Public Response to Tax Amnesty

Public response to the tax amnesty offered by the Lesotho Revenue Authority has been disappointing. Only 93 people have so far applied and been granted amnesty, according to the Commissioner General of the LRA, Mr. Kevin Donovan.

The response has forced the LRA not to consider any extension to the cut off date of 28 February, 2005, the Commissioner said.

He said the business community in particularly did not seem to be taking the amnesty seriously enough, despite the wide consultations with the various interest groups prior to the Bill being introduced in Parliament.

Selective audits will be carried out and taxpayers who should have applied for the amnesty identified and penalised immediately following the expiry of the amnesty.
