Botswana to Phase out Leaded Petrol
Botswana is to phase out the use of leaded petrol by 31 December 2005 because of the fuel’s health and environmental dangers. A statement from the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Affairs said that the public should consult car dealers if in doubt about whether their cars can use leaded or unleaded petrol. A replacement for leaded petrol (Lead Replacement Petrol) will be made available by December 2005, performing the same function as leaded petrol, except that it will not contain lead.

The use of leaded petrol is prevalent in the country as motorists believe leaded petrol provides more power. This has however been discounted as petrol of the same octane rating (93) is used for both kinds of petrol, meaning the two provide the same output, the Ministry of Energy statement said.
