| 2005, International Year of Physics | |
| A
steering committee made up of representatives of institutions interested in
physics and its promotion has been formed to prepare for the national
celebration of 2005 as the International Year of Science.
A meeting called at the behest of the Department of Science and Technology on February 3 chose representatives of the National University of Lesotho's Physics Department; UNESCO; the Science and Technology Department; the Lesotho Mathematics and Science Teachers Association (LMSTA); the Ministry of Education and Training; Lerotholi Polytechnic and a representative of the student community to prepare for the celebrations. Director of the Department of Science and Technology, Mrs 'Maseqobela Williams, said the celebrations were intended to help demystify physics and other science subjects. This could be achieved by putting projects that promote everyday applications of physics in the public eye. The media could also help dispel the lack of understanding and the impact of physics, especially in the face of emerging technologies. The celebrations also had the enthusiastic support of the Physics Department of the NUL, whose Head, Dr. Rapapa, revealed that the celebration coincided with not only the 50th anniversary of the Department but also the centenary of Albert Einstein's discovery of the existence of atoms, the "bi bang" theory. 07 February 2005 |
