Members of the Vaal Reefs Disaster Trust will get a chance to express views on the way the Trust is administered at the annual general meeting of Basotho families whose members died in the South African mine disaster in 1995 on January 13. Ms. Collyn Mnzana of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said the meeting an annual report as well as feedback on achievement by the Trust will be presented. It is expected that officials from the Ministry of Education and Training as well as the trustees will attend. This will be followed the next day, by a meeting with the children of the deceased which will discuss education matters. The Vaal Reefs Disaster Trust is responsible for payment of school fees for children of the deceased and also assists surviving spouses with projects like poultry farming, sewing as well as knitting, she said. The
Trust was established in 1995 by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in
collaboration with Anglo Gold Mining Company after the Vaal Reefs mine
disaster where 104 mineworkers died. Fifty six of the deceased were Basotho. |
