Road Fund on a Self Promotion Campaign

The Road Fund has organized a series publicity workshops throughout the country to teach road users and the general public about its activities scheduled to run from January 12 to 24.

A statement issued by the Road Fund said they have realised the importance of public awareness of the Fund's functions opposed to those of Road Agencies. Functions of the Road Fund Board and Secretariat, their activities, the relationship between the Fund and the Ministry of Finance as well as the difference between road
user charges as opposed to general taxes will be explained at the workshops, it said.

Other topics to be dealt with include the relations between the Fund and Road Agencies, obligations of Road Agencies, types of road works that are funded by the Fund as well as the procedure for allocating funds for road maintenance, the statement said.

Its Secretariat will facilitate the workshops while resource persons will be drawn from the Board, Roads Branch, Department of Rural Roads and Road Safety section as well as the Ministry of Local Government.

The Road Fund was established by legal notice No 16 of 1996 to collect revenue from road users to finance projects such as road maintenance, rehabilitation, upgrading, new road works and road safety campaigns.
